2008 Peer Awards Call for Entries Submissions for the 2008 Peer Awards, the largest regional media competition in the Mid-Atlantic, are now being accepted. The deadline has been extended until June 30, 2008. Professionals and students who resided in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, or Pennsylvania within the past year may enter work that was completed between June 2007 and June 2008. There are two main categories for submissions: Production categories and Skills categories. Production categories are those in which an entire show is judged. In short, judges look at all of the skills that went into creating a body of work, from pre-production, through production, to post-production. Programs entered in these categories are typically submitted by the Producer, but may be entered by anyone whose work went into the show’s production. In the Skills categories, judges are only looking at a single skill. Therefore, Skills categories are usually entered by individuals who are showcasing their own particular talent, such as their skill in directing, writing, sound design, editing, and so forth. However, a Producer may enter for the editor, actor, DP, or other skilled professional who worked on the piece. In fact, Producers are encouraged to enter their actors, gaffers, DPs, writers, and editors if those individuals do not plan n entering their work themselves. Production categories include programs in the following genres: documentary; docudrama; entertainment; children’s program; magazine program; commercial; public service announcement; program/series open; interstitial; pro bono; education/training; public relations/marketing; internal communications; internet-only; independent feature; independent short; art/experimental; music video; student production (both dramatic and non-dramatic); and pro bono. Many of these are broken down into subcategories by budget, so that projects with similar budgets are judged together.
The Skills categories, many of which are also broken down into subcategories by budget, include: acting (dramatic and non-dramatic); voiceover; directing; editing; graphics; scriptwriting; original composition; sound design; sound mixing; director of photography; lighting/design/direction; makeup; wardrobe; and set design. Entry fees for Production categories are $125 for the first entry and $75 for subsequent entries. In the Skills categories, the first entry is $75 and subsequent entries are $50. College students may enter for $25, and work that was produced pro bono may be entered for free. Why enter the 2008 Peer Awards? Because your creativity, talent and skill deserve to be recognized by those who can truly appreciate the effort it takes to produce superlative work: your peers.
